She finds the envelope with her mother’s personal items in it, including a necklace with a quarter attached to it. Over at the hospital, we get a flashback to “One Breath,” when Scully herself was on the brink of death. Mulder wants to know who speaks for the homeless, and one homeless man says “The Band-Aid Nose Man” (aka The Trashman), just as Mulder looks up and notices the section of the billboard with the artwork on it is missing. The homeless are being moved due to gentrification, but Nancy doesn’t want them at the hospital that is also two blocks from a school. Mulder asks for access to the roof where the billboard is, and while he waits comes across, Daryl Landry who is redeveloping the area and Nancy Huff, the president of the school board. Scully is surprised that she didn’t ask for her or Bill, then tells her mother that she’s been where she is now and while she knows her father and Melissa are there, she asks her not to go home yet, because they still need her. A nurse tells her she regained consciousness for a few moments and asked for Charlie, her youngest son who she is estranged from. Scully arrives at the hospital where her mother is in a coma and breathing through tubes.

Mulder also notices a billboard across the street with art of tall figure, right before he also discovers a band-aid stuck to his shoe. Mulder and the local cop watch the security camera footage, noticing that the cameras around the building were purposely knocked out of position, making the attacker extremely tall. Mulder tells her to go, while he notices a surveillance camera in Cutler’s office. He’s calling (from Germany) to tell her he got a call about their mother, Margaret, who has suffered a heart attack and is in ICU. Scully gets a phone call and at first glance, she sees the name William (her son), but it quickly changes to William Scully, Jr., her brother. There are body parts everywhere, including a head in a trashcan. The next morning at the crime scene, the crime scene tech explains that there were no prints for the killer to leave as it was born without footprints. Upstairs, he’s visited by a mysterious figure who rips his arms off and takes them back to the garbage truck he pulled up in. He shows up at his office and tells the homeless outside that they’re next. We start off with Joseph Cutler (Alessandro Juliani) directing his employees to hose down the local homeless population to get them off a particular street. “Home Again” brought both the horror and the heart, and a performance from Gillian Anderson that belongs among her best. Leave it to The X-Files in any iteration to create an episode in which the audience can go from being completely disgusted to drowning in our tears, and not for the same reason.
